Heaven and the Heather (Jove Highland Fling, ISBN 0-515-13402-3, November 2002) is Elizabeth's first novel. It is a love story replete with humor, intrigue, and untamed passion set in restless and reckless mid-sixteenth century Scotland. To weave such a historically lavish tale, Elizabeth dove into her Caledonian roots, her extensive knowledge of Scottish history and understanding of Scottish Gaelic.

Heaven and the Heather was a finalist in WRW's Marlene contest, and was sold to Berkley/Jove shortly after.

According to Best-selling and Award Winning author Teresa Medeiros, "Heaven and the Heather is a heavenly read--daring, delightful, and delicious! Elizabeth Holcombe is an excellent writer with an exquisite historical voice."

Critically acclaimed Berkley/Jove author Hope Tarr praises Heaven and the Heather's "sumptuous historical detail and a generous helping of humor [which] make for a delightful debut."
